"Shadow" 《影》
By Karen Chen (Published 2025)
Shadow is Karen Chen’s second poetry collection, a deeply personal work born from the dual landscapes of collective and private loss. Written in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating passing of her only son, the collection is organized into four poignant chapters:
-
Grief for the Son: A mother’s raw exploration of love and mourning.
-
Inside and Outside: Reflections on the boundary between private pain and the external world.
-
The Covid Pandemic: Documenting the "silent world" and the collective struggle of the lockdown era.
-
After the First Book: A reflection on the poetic journey and the evolution of the soul from the first publication to the present.

Through the Eyes of a Drone
I
stand above the clouds
Looking down at the earth.
Through an aerial lens,
I catch a glimpse of
A grand narrative.
Now I understand
Why the language of drones
Is different than ours.
It is untouched by earthly life
It is only an eye
Without feeling, without touch.
My son,
Under the eye of the drone
Only then do you know:
"Overtaking on a curve"
Is simply
Playing with death.
